I've noticed the people in my head sometimes have strong opinions about songs I like I have an irredeemably over-active imagination.  Thus is born Character Song Review Minute.  Huzzah.

To kick this crap off, the characters and I visit "Hard Way Home" by Brandi Carlile.

Huinárë: I'm not exactly into country, but this I like very much.  The instrumentation is rich, I like her voice, it's got a good beat, the lyrics make sense to me, and it's got that wonderful paradoxical quality of being melancholy in its words yet somewhat upbeat in its sound.  I can find nothing to complain about.

Gandalf: This song evokes a pleasant mental picture of crossing the shire in a rickety cart and having a nice smoke in the garden at Bag End.  I don't see what's melancholy about it, if you ignore the "fake my death" bit.  Which I arguably did anyway.

Draugluin: I love this song!  It sometimes sounds like the backup singers are trying to howl like wolves and failing miserably, but I like that.  I can also really relate to the lyrics.

Pallando: While I'm loathe to agree with the werewolf, I can also relate to this song, though you wouldn't know it from my eerie composure.

Saruman: I despise this song and I can find nothing relateable in it.  It does not have a catchy beat.  Never have I lain awake brooding at night while the planet turns.  And no, I am not dabbing the corner of my eye covertly with a handkerchief.  These things do not happen in Angrenost.

Sauron: This is a terrible song.  You are all weak-minded pansies.  I regret nothing!  I'm always up for stealing some souls, though.

Ancalagon: Huinárë wanted me to say something about this song because she thought it might be a good exercise in character development.  Huinárë is an annoying gadfly whom I shall take great pleasure in destroying.  I'm completely indifferent to this song and it fails to speak to me.  I mean, I know what I want to be when I grow up, so the song has gone wrong right off the bat.  I want to be the dreadest, more fearsome dragon ever.  Which I will be, thanks to Lord Melkor.  All hail Lord Melkor.  With the heel of his boot he shall grind your puny mortal souls into the dust and ashes of all-consuming despair.

I sometimes lose my faith in luck
I don't know what I want to be when I grow up
I just count the rain
Wearing the floor through the boards again

Young Feanaro highly approves of the verse quoted above. Something about his bouncing from item to item - runes to metal to gemstones to...to...to. Oops, he flitted back to his workshop again. Silly, insubstantial spirit that he is.

Tell Fëanáro he should try concocting a new type of banjo. =D
Somehow I think a lot of people, real and fictional, can get behind that verse.

A new banjo....not a bad idea :-) Then again, in a different tack to this, he did exactly that when he engendered Macalaure, hmmmm?
