So this tower called "Perrott's Folly" is allegedly Tolkien's inspiration for Orthanc.  I'm...not sure I see it, other than that it's a tall, isolated tower, but okay.

Then there's this article of questionable coherence, which claims the above, and also has a picture that proves the Mail must not have even the mildest Tolkien geek on staff.  How embarrassing for them.

Curumo:  THAT IS NOT MY HOUSE.  THAT IS MAIRON'S HOUSE.  Orthanc is much more attractive than the Evil Lighthouse.  I do not have a fucking stupid glowing eye on my house, thank you very much.  Just a bit of research before spewing your poorly-written ignorance onto the world wide web; this is all I ask.

Huin: You do realize that the Evil Lighthouse was Peter Jackson's doing and that Mairon would actually find that in very poor taste.

Curumo: You've missed my point, as usual, and I didn't ask for your opinion.  It's amusing to picture Mairon living in an Evil LIghthouse, FYI.

Huin: Probably because Mairon triggers all your deep-seated self-esteem issues?

Curumo: I'm going to go lurk in my way-more-attractive-than-Mairon's-house tower now.  Which also is not a red brick thing with turrets. Fuck you and good day.

I could totally see this tower as a center for art and exhibitions, but they certainly got their first comparison photo mixed up in the article, didn't they? LOL

Yes, I'm happy it will be put to good use for a good cause, although that fact got buried by my initial deluge of disgruntlement. =D

Curumo: Well, I'm glad someone appreciates my derisive wit.

You know the role of the sub-editor seems to have been lost over time... The article was really pretty accurate, until someone added a misleading headline and the wrong picture...

True, it wasn't really that bad an article. I could hardly get past that first foible though. And then they said something vaguely about "the other tower," meaning Barad-Dur I presume, but really, "the other tower"? There are quite a lot of them in M-e. =D
