Evidently there's some kind of children's workbook out which has some quite lovely images within.  The saints of the interweb have seen to it that these are made available to us all.

Images include a character we have never seen (Thranduil) and a character we have seen but not really in this context before (Saruman).

Thranduil is not a favorite character of mine.  In fact, it must be respectfully stated that I quite dislike him (it's difficult to be a Dwarf fan and like Thranduil).  But that character design is great.  He looks like you wouldn't want to cross him in a dark alley.  Even his crown, which could easily be ridiculous-looking, only adds something to it.  It's almost antler-like.  Reminds me of some figure of myth I vaguely remember but can't place (I'm sure someone here knows, help me out...dude with the antlers...).  Also I like his color scheme; I thoroughly approve of grey/silver with splashes of bloody colors like crimson or russet.
Not sure I like the massive fricking bling on his hand, but Thranduil seems to me like the type who would have some completely impractical bling anyway, so.

Saruman!  =D =D  (oh, and Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel).  I wish that picture were a bit clearer.  Ah well.  I'm quite amused by it.  He rather looks like he doesn't want to be there at all and is trying to restrain himself from bolting from the room or lobbing something at someone.
SARUMAN: I don't think I'm supposed to be here right now.
GALADRIEL: Nor am I, but you don't hear me complaining about it.

Thranduil likes to party.

Oh yeah, I was going to mention that phrase, it amused me quite a lot. Especially because he doesn't really look like much of a partier.

I'm not sure about Thranduil's eyebrows in that top left pic, he looks like his nose is being attacked by a pair of caterpillars!

I think the antlers may be supposed to be reminiscent of Herne the hunter, though there are quite a lot of horned gods and mythical figures kicking about. I agree it's a nice concept for a crown!

Cool, I don't recall if I'd heard of Herne before.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused by the eyebrows in said pic...Maybe the Elvenking looks so severe because he has to attack the caterpillars with a razor or tweezers each morning.

*screams and flails at Thranduil*

I am a huge fan of Thranduil precisely because he is such a condescending bling-loving Elvish asshole. The last movies painted Elves so very saintly, but there simply can't be any doubt about it; Thranduil likes wine, glam and seems like the sort of person you only pretend to like on parties in the name of networking all while being pretty and pointy eared. I think he's hilarious and a perfect counter PJ's saint Galadriel et all. He's not Feanorishly horribly magnificently heroically tragically awful but just a bit of an ass in day to day business. Who really likes to get drunk. Though they do share a weakness for teh sparklies. Well, and I may be prejudiced because I relentlessly fangirled the actor in Pushing Daisies and am now convinced that everything he will ever do will be awesome. Also OMG OUTFIT haha. I love it. It's very...sparkly. I hope they have, like, ten different outfits for him throughout the first movie already.

Also Saruman! And Galadriel in what looks like the Elvish version of a sun dress! Elrond looking like he doesn't wear his Vulcan robes this time! EEH!

Haha, true, I hadn't really thought about it that way until that image came on the scene but you've got a point. I just can't get past his anti-Dwarf tendencies.

I am adding Thranduil's coat to the list of Fictional Coats I Shall Steal, right after Bilbo Baggins' coat.

I actually rather like Galadriel because she usually looks dignified to me, but that dress makes her look a bit tra-la-la-lally. XD

GALADRIEL (straight-faced): Tra-la-la-lally. Ha ha.
SARUMAN: Can I leave now?

I'm going to be captioning that picture forever..

I do like that Thranduil looks like a greedy sod here. I mean can you even hold a sword while wearing all those rings??

Dude with antlers: Cernunnos maybe?

My problem with this new image of Thranduil is that he doesn't look at all like he belongs in a forest! He wears the crown of leaves and twigs, but he doesn't strike as a nature boy at all.

And maybe that's appropriate. I don't follow elves, so someone who knows something can enlighten me, but I hear Thranduil is not of the same type of elf as the people he rules over? If this is true, I suppose I can see something along the lines of "I'll wear this rustic crown for the people to show them I can relate to their backwater ways".

ETA - I meant 'hookah' in the comment about the Cernunnos image, not 'bong.' Word usage fail. D= In any case, Thranduil and his folk could probably get good mileage out of either device.

True that he doesn't look traditionally sylvan. It strikes me that I didn't have that thought because I instinctively associated his look with something a bit like this except a bit colder/further along toward winter.

I don't follow elves, so someone who knows something can enlighten me...

Yes, this. A cursory investigation into Thranduil says that he lived in Doriath (whose king essentially perished for love of particular bling) during the First Age, but I don't understand all the Elven lineages and cultures enough to fully appreciate the implications of that.

It may be a poor res image, but it is a perfect icon!

Nothing to do with the pictures...
