FSC: Day 15 (fin)

Day Fifteen
In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something fun you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it.

______________

Many have already challenged us all to review/comment more on others' work.  This is a fine idea.

I'm not the type to suddenly issue a challenge, however, I will take this opportunity to throw out an idea which has occasionally surfaced in my brain: Would anyone be interested in a Tolkien darkfic/angst/horror/etc challenge at some point?  I don't know what a proper name would be, but basically an "everything is bad and it all hurts" type thing.

Yeah I know I'm full of surprises and no one would ever have expected a query of that particular nature from me.

On that happy note, I hope everyone has enjoyed this lovely little challenge!  =D

I would! At least the angst/darkfic part, I'm not so sure I'm good at Tolkien horror.

If I get to kill off elves and make people sob, it's all good. Well, except for the fact that then I get random comments four months later where I forget that was the point, and momentarily panic when the comment starts with "You made me cry!"

Hurrah! And it's not like it would need to have all three of those things...that would be a pretty tall/doomy order.

[personal profile] ladybrooke 2014-01-21 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
But I like tall orders! If you hadn't noticed that from B2MeB...:P

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-21 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
As you wish: I demand that YOU have all three of those things. ;P

[identity profile] keiliss.livejournal.com 2014-01-17 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Sweet, gentle Huin wants dark? Surely not?

:D Seriously, that's a great idea and I would be up for it.

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm as shocked as you are. ;)

Cool! Looks like there's at least enough initial interest that I might try and get it off the ground sometime.

Mmmaybe? I tend to find the Silmarillion existentially depressing enough as it is. I might torture some characters if you catch me in the right mood, but generally I need some hope with my doom.

I only got through about a third of the challenge -- I wonder whether it's still worth trying to finish. And there are still people's entries that I want to comment on.

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose "doom with some hope on the side" would count! It's hard to draw lines/define genres/etc, but basically something with an overall-not-bright tone is I suppose what I'd have in mind.

I think there are still some people catching up on the challenge. If you do want to finish it, go for it!

[identity profile] ladyelleth.livejournal.com 2014-01-17 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder what inspired that. :D

In other words: Yes, yes, hell yes!

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Noted, noted, and noted! =D

Me! (Though not so much on character death for me, and I also need a little bit of hope. I'm not sure whether that's a yes or a maybe.)

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Call it a yes? L'Ignota raised a similar issue about hope, and I have a feeling a challenge like this would not go very far if I expressly stipulated "NO HOPE!"

[personal profile] independence1776 2014-01-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Then it's a yes. :)

Would it be a fic exchange or a prompt fest like this year's B2MeM or the now-defunct [livejournal.com profile] dark_fest or something else entirely?

This!

That made me laugh aloud. :D Entirely too appropriate.

[identity profile] shadowbrides.livejournal.com 2014-01-17 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
ooooh yesss. I think I could cook up some good torture scenes.

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we both think you could do that. (I'm so pleased people are in fact showing interest in something like this.)

Count me in and pass the tourniquet.

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Gamely spoken.

(I got more initial response than I was hoping, so I might try and get this off the ground at some point..)

[identity profile] aliana1.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what a proper name would be, but basically an "everything is bad and it all hurts" type thing.

I think THAT should be the proper name.

BRING THE PAIN!

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a tad long for a name, although not for a tagline/motto/whatnot.

AS YET UNNAMED CHALLENGE:
Everything is bad and it all hurts.

OR!

[AS YET UNNAMED CHALLENGE:
BRING THE PAIN!

Ok but in all seriousness. [livejournal.com profile] bunn's suggestion above is terribly clever and cracks me up, but I'd have a hard time trying to present a challenge by that name with a straight face? I've been thinking something like "Doom in June" if I aimed for June, which I probably should because the other months don't sound good with "doom." And as far as I know, there are no major challenges going around our neck of the woods in June?

ANYONE FEEL FREE TO CHIME IN HERE WITH SUGGESTIONS PLEASE! =)

I like "Doom in June".

I don't believe there's anything major going on then (if you'll thinking they'll be due sometime in June), though I think that's about the time frame Ardor in August/Sultry in September kicks off.

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-19 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the feedback!

(I'm consolidating your question from upthread into this comment):
Would it be a fic exchange or a prompt fest like this year's B2MeM or the now-defunct [livejournal.com profile] dark_fest or something else entirely?

Something else entirely! I'm not sure if there's a specific term for this approach, but I liked the informal way [livejournal.com profile] aliana1 set up her Bechdel Test Challenge last year: She didn't have any prompts, just a theme (action/adventure); and from what I remember we were just encouraged to work on our stories, talk about our progress, and post links to our output at any time during the month (in that case, January). That seems like a reasonable way to initiate a small challenge.

Yes, I was thinking June as the month they're due, if the above-described approach can be said to have a particular due date. It seems there is stuff of some sort going on year-round. I know AinA's really big, and then NaNo consumes the efforts of many, and then Yule exchanges, and then B2MeM(and somewhere amidst that, the MEFAs eventually...)

That format sounds perfect for this!

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-19 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think so too, friendly and low-pressure. I'm not up to trying to do anything big and complicated, but hosting progress report/squeeing/support threads is totally something I could do.

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-21 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
OMG I was just looking back through this and I realized I said MEFAs. That is awkward. I meant the TOMEs. ;(

June (at least this year) should be the perfect time. I mean, I can't think of anything major that would be going on. Camp Nano is in April and July this year, FFM is in July, and I can't think of any major fandom ones. I'm generally pretty on top of writing challenges.

[identity profile] huinare.livejournal.com 2014-01-21 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Cool, thanks! I'm not that on top of things, so thus far it's good to know I apparently haven't overlooked some big thing already going down in June.

Welcome! I'm just good at remembering them, because otherwise I sign myself up for too many things and it ends up a disaster. Checking the major lists of writing things doesn't seem to bring up anything either. And if I decide to resurrect the Script Frenzy group on dA, I'll probably hopefully run it in May...:P
