For some reason I find this notion particularly valid for The Hobbit, probably because its narration style is not as detailed and thorough as LoTR...plenty of room for things to be left out that could conceivably have occurred. And I'm starting to get twitchy about the complaint that there cannot possibly be female elf warriors in Mirkwood...statistically improbable does not equal impossible!
