Dreamwidth has so many more good themes than LJ does

Decided to switch my journal themes up for a change. Over at LJ, it was the same browsing through the small assemblage of crappy free themes they've had unchanged for like a decade (choose "Forest Afar"). At DW, meanwhile, you are literally drowning in beautiful free themes (got too overwhelmed to browse them all and settled upon "Pulse")!

Another point in Dreamwidth's favor. This is where I declaim something about the elder days passing into younger days, but that's too much work.

This is clever. It wouldn't work for me because I don't see Balin, Fili, or Ori as having the hair colors it describes them with here (is it just me?) but it's cute.

But then again I could already ID them all on sight before the movie even came out because <3 Dwarves.

Perrott's Folly: or, "Get your f***ing dark towers straight, people."

So this tower called "Perrott's Folly" is allegedly Tolkien's inspiration for Orthanc. I'm...not sure I see it, other than that it's a tall, isolated tower, but okay.

Then there's this article of questionable coherence, which claims the above, and also has a picture that proves the Mail must not have even the mildest Tolkien geek on staff. How embarrassing for them.

Bechdel Challenge report: Fic happening eventually

Actually, I have indeed begun my replacement Bechdelian fic, but I don't know when it'll be ready. First week of classes plus possibly moving house, or not, and other such stuff getting in the way.

I take comfort in the fact that many of you haven't completed your stories yet, either. Because I'm just a nice person like that. =)

Hobbit second viewing reaction

My viewing on opening day was swarming with emotions, happy and otherwise, and analysis. Seeing it again two days ago, I intended to view it in a less invested way, and with a mind to the fact that it’s better to have stuff added to one book than taken away from three books. A lot of stuff that bothered me the first time, I tuned out or didn’t mind anymore. This probably also dulled my senses to the parts I did enjoy, but whatever.

Gender and book covers

Thanks to Wheelrider's post, I went off on a tangent and found a couple links that were of amusement and interest to me, and hopefully to some of you.

Fantasy author Jim C. Hines took it upon himself to reproduce some of the anatomically questionable, physically torturous, and notably objectifying poses of female characters on a selection of sci-fi/fantasy book covers. Except it's him instead of a non-existent woman of unlikely proportions: "Striking a Pose (Women and Fantasy Covers)"

To address the righteous outcry of those pointing out that women aren't the only victims of objectification, Hines then tackled some men on book covers, concluding (aptly, I think) that yes, men are objectified, but not in the same way and not to the same extent: "Posing Like a Man"

It really does my dessicated heart good to see men defending "feminist" notions such as the respective portrayals of women and men in media, and their overt or covert implications.

Okay, done spamming LJ now. I'd been debating doing this as a Blingee for a while and it suited my mood today. I also learnt that Blingee is not a site I should be using on a laptop as falling-apart as this is.
I'm going to go ahead and blame Dwim and Wheelrider for this.

For quite a while I've been stricken with the odd dual phenomenon of a lot of ideas but total writer's block. A couple circumstances lifted that these past few days, namely a new prompt set over at tolkien_weekly (how could I resist the prospect of using the theme "Blessings" as ironically as possible?) that suddenly made finishing my long-delayed responses to the "Bogey-stories" set easy, and the January Action-Adventure Bechdel Test Challenge proposed byaliana1.

My finished drabble series concerning poor Gríma (two to date, each a chapter) can be found here.

For the Bechdel thing, I thought I was mainly going to write Thuringwethil, but Ungoliant (Wirilomë) came and stole the show instead and I've got nearly 4,000 words done. Wirilomë is such a fun POV character for me as it turns out, because she has all these bizarre and inappropriate ideas such as might lead somebody to become a giant-ass spider. AND. It's caused me to return to my pet project of trying to reconcile Arda's given history with Earth's geologic history (this gets easier the more I ponder it over time...shoot me, I used to want to be a geologist, okay?) Thuringwethil is still going to be a major player, and my genderbent!Pallando had a cameo in a pivotal scene because any excuse to write Pallandë. This is fun times Thanks for spearheading this challenge, Aliana!

Testing the crosspost thing. I'm getting a bit sick of LJ's shenanigans so I've decided to follow everyone else's shining proactive example.

ETA - so for those who are messed about with this cross-journaling thing longer than I have, pray tell: Where does one go to export one's prior LJ entries to DW? Is there a way to follow one's LJ-based f-list from one's Dreamwidth account?
